One of the wonderful aspects of the spa experience is the “Getaway” ambiance that is unique to every sap. A spa is a place where we all go for relaxation and renewal. A key element of the spa experience is the code of conduct that contributes to the unique spa ambiance. The code covers both the spa employees and patrons. For the first time spa patron there can be addition concerns about expectations, for example, issues regarding clothing during a massage is a common concern.
In general, spa etiquette is simple. For patrons is it following the golden rule and treating all other guests and spa employees as you would be treated. This is, of course, with the utmost respect and consideration.
For the spa and spa staff, there is the additional level of consideration that the patron is a quest in your spa. Every effort is to be made to create a special ambiance, and experience, that makes every guest feel exceptionally welcome, with every reasonable concern addressed and all questions answered. It is critical for the staff to ask the questions, and explain what is expected of the quest, in every situation where a quest may have uncertainty. Ultimately, every patron is a special quest that the spa would like to see again and again. The art of making the quest feel welcome is a key aspect of the success of a spa.
The Spa Guest Should expect:
- First and foremost to be treated with consideration, respect and as a welcome guest
- A clear explanation of all spa policies regarding arrival times, treatment options and costs, and what every treatment includes
- A safe, very clean, and comfortable environment
- To have every question or concern clearly addressed
- For the spa to address any treatment concerns, including stopping any treatment immediately upon request
- A well trained staff and where appropriate, licensed staff
- Clear information on staff certifications, training, and licensing
- Clear information on all products used by the spa
For the Spa Quest:
- Follow the golden rule in treatment of other quests and spa staff
- A spa is a quiet zone. Respect the ambiance and quiet of the spa.
- Respect the expected arrival times posted by the spa, usually 15 or more minutes earlier for any treatment
- Ask any questions you may have.
- Massages and other full body treatments are usually done without clothing and with draping. Make it clear if you have any concerns regarding this standard. You have a right to your concerns and should not be intimidated by your concerns.
- Unless the spa allows it, do not bring children, and, if you do, do not leave them unattended. This is extremely rude to the spa staff and other patrons and may be unsafe.
- Tipping is expected. Tipping is still a regional phenomena, for example, one expects to tip more in New York city than in rural areas. The usual range is from 10%-to-20%. However, if your experience is unsatisfactory, tip accordingly.
- Honest feedback should be appreciated and desired by the spa. Provide it.
Finally, relax and enjoy. There is nothing easier than enjoying a good spa experience. After all, relaxing when being pampered is not very hard, and, it is what “going spa” is all about.
