Amid the constant post approval revelations of dangerous side effects and deaths from prescription and over-the-counter drugs, the safety of vitamins is reaffirmed in the latest report from the American Association of Poison Control Centers
The report for 2005, published in the journal Clinical Toxicology, finds no reported deaths from vitamin exposures. The finds of no deaths is a clear finding on the safety of vitamins. It is estimated that over half of the US population takes some form of vitamin supplementation daily. This means that over 50 billion vitmin doses are taken annually. Yet not a single death from this huge number of doses was reported to any of the 61 poison control centers around the country in 2005. This is a remarkable statistic, especially when compared to the thousands of deaths attributed to medication each year.
So zero deaths from vitamin A, B, C, D, E or any other. Yet study after study continues to show the powerful preventative impact of vitamins on human health.
Something to think about.
The American Association of Poison Control Centers maintains the national database of information logged by the country’s 61 Poison Control Centers. Case records in this database are from self-reported calls and only contain information provided when the public or healthcare professionals report an actual or potential exposure to a substance
