Research published in the journal Diabetes Care finds that extracts of the Indian herb Coccinia indica significantly reduced blood sugar levels.
In the small randomized study, researchers gave half the participants one-gram C. indica extract each day, and half were given a placebo.
After a 90 day period of this regime, tHose receiving the herb had their after meal blood glucose levels reduced by as much as 18 percent. The fast blood glucose levels were reported reduced bu as much as 16 percent.
“This study suggests that C. cordifolia extract has a potential hypoglycemic action in patients with mild diabetes,” the researchers said. “However, further studies are needed to elucidate mechanisms of action.”
The researchers said they did not know what it was about the plant that had caused the beneficial effect.
Previous research has suggested that C. indica may be beneficial in the treatment of diabetes.
Also known as adult-onset diabetes, type 2 diabetes can often be managed by carefully monitoring your diet. It is estimated that over 15 million people in the United States suffer from diabetes.
