A new study published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirms the path to health and preventing the big killers that also drive huge perscription drug sales: obesity, cancer, cardiovascular disease.

According to the study it is never to late to improve your health, and prevent illness, through diet and exercise. The well known and common sense keys to good health.

The study found that adults, 65 and older, can attain significant health improvements with simple and realistic lifestyle changes. Importantly, it found that with this simple “prescription” the risk of obesity, cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and other diseases can be reduced.

The study is a survey of previous studies. Its key findings include:

Lower cancer rates in older adults is associated with a low calorie diet and regular exercise, up to a 50 percent reduction of risk according to one of the studies reviewed.

Lowering high blood pressure or hypertension?a major risk for cardiovascular disease?through improved diet and exercise had more dramatic health benefits for the elderly than for any other age group. Control of hypertension could potentially prevent one-fifth of coronary heart disease cases in men, and 30 percent in women.

Weight training increased the ability to burn calories and helped prevent osteoporosis.

For seniors, calcium and vitamin D supplements helped reduce bone loss rates and bone fracture numbers.

The important and positive message is that it is never too late to help improve your health.
