Green Tea May Help Treat Uterine Fibroids

New research published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology finds yet another possible health benifit from green tea.
The study found that green tea extract may be useful as a treatment for uterine fibroids.
Green tea extract can kill human leiomyoma cells in tissue cultures and can eradicate fibroid lesions in lab animals, according to Dr. Ayman Al-Hendy, director of clinical research at Meharry Medical College in Nashville.
Green tea contains volatile oils, vitamins, minerals, and caffeine, but the primary constituents of interest are the polyphenols, particularly the catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The polyphenols are believed to be responsible for most of green tea’s roles in promoting good health.
“If we can prove this compound is effective, millions of women can start self-treatment and self-management,” Al-Hendy said in a news release.
Uterine fibroids can cause anemia, fatigue and excessive vaginal bleeding. Currently, the only treatment option is hysterectomy.
