New research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal finds that medical use of marijuana does not cause an increase in serious negative medical side effects, but does appear to increase non-serious side effects.
“The therapeutic use of cannabis and cannabis-based medicines raises safety concerns for patients, clinicians, policy-makers, insurers, researchers and regulators.” write researchers from McGill University in Montreal and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
According to the study, the majority of adverse effects from medical use of marijuana involved non-serious adverse events like dizziness and drowsiness.
“Overall, we found an 86 percent increase in the rate of non-serious adverse events among the patients treated with cannabinoids compared to the patients in the control groups,” Ware said in a statement. “The majority of events were mild to moderate in severity.”
At the same time, researchers noted that there was a lack of quality long-term studies of the effects of medical medical use of marijuana
