Mom’s vitamin D Affects Baby’s Dental Needs
July 5, 2008Another reason for adequate vitamin D, especially for moms.
According to a Canadian study, vitamin D levels of pregnant women is linked to baby’s incidence of enamel defects and early-childhood tooth decay. The study is the first to show that pregnant women’s vitamin D levels may affect the dental health of their infants.
Researchers analyzed the vitamin D levels of 200 women found that about 80% of women in their second trimester of pregnancy had inadequate vitamin D levels. Mothers of infants with early childhood tooth decay had significantly lower vitamin D levels than mothers of cavity-free infants. Infants with enamel defects were significantly more likely to have early childhood tooth decay, the researchers said.
The study, was to be presented at the General Session of the International Association for Dental Research, in Toronto.
