National Stroke Association’s 2006 National Stroke Awareness Month campaign will focus on the “Women in Your Life”, because women underestimate their stroke risk, are uniquely affected by stroke, and are more likely to be caregivers to stroke survivors as well as health care decision makers in their household. In addition, men are less susceptible to health messaging and it is the goal of the stroke education campaign to engage men by asking them to think about the women in their lives
Every 53 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke. Someone dies from stroke every 3.3 minutes. Stroke is the third leading cause of death behind heart disease and cancer and is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability. Approximately 700,000 Americans will have a stroke this year, and about 167,000 will die from it. Stroke Awareness Month seeks to increase community education and awareness of this oftentimes silent killer.
