A new study on animals suggests that dehydrated tomatoes may fight prostate cancer. The new study published in the journal Cancer Research says the processing is the thing that may make the difference.
Researchers found in dehydrated tomatoes a carbohydrate called FruHis. This compound appeared to protect rats from developing prostate tumors. The best protection was when dehydrated tomatoes were dehydrated into tomato paste and supplemented with additional FruHis.
The findings could aid in developing new, less toxic cancer therapies, said lead researcher Dr. Valeri V. Mossine, of the University of Missouri in Columbia.
For the study tumors were induced in the rats, Those on the high-FruHis diet lived longer and had fewer tumors. Researchers found that FruHis appeared to work in two ways. It is an antioxidant that helps prevent the initial formation of tumors and it seemed to work in concert with lycopene, found in tomatoes, to kill off prostate cancer cells.
Of course researchers noted that the study involved rats, but this is another study that finds there is something happening with tomatoes, and how hard is it to eat processed tomatoes.
Pizza anyone, organic of course.
